Material Exploration : GSAPP 125th Exhibition

The objective of this workshop is to design and fabricate a display surface for the 125th Alumni Exhibition of Columbia GSAPP. As such, the workshop will be split into small teams who will take responsibility for a zone of the total assemblage and guide the formal + material exploration that will define that zone's performance. Suggested programs are display surfaces, bar/table surfaces, and canopy/lighting, though each zone is open for speculation. Each zone will be integrated together through a space frame construction, to be provided for students to work on top of as a base, and to alleviate problems of support – therefore allowing the exploration to focus on phenomenal issues of surface and fabrication.

Issues of panelization, material performance, and fabrication logic will interface with surficial/formal issues of projection, extrusion, perforation, and texture to create the performance + aesthetic sensibility of each "zone". After each student team designs an appropriate formal/material strategy for the zone of their choosing, we will begin a sequence of strategic prototypes to allow for each system to become sophisticated enough to allow for its integration into the exhibition as a whole.

The workshop will move rapidly towards the deployment of the students design so as to be exhibited at the end of October at the 125th Exhibition. We are looking for motivated designers who are ready to bring a level of clarity and interest and are motivated to work with assemblages of material as well as new techniques of CNC milling and CNC Waterjet cutting.

This workshop, for registration purposes, will be classified as an "independent study", but will be run as a typical workshop, involving instruction in design/fabrication technique and will meet on a weekly basis to track each team's progress. All production in the class will culminate @ 1:1 scale finished pieces.
